Validation research of carabao paradigm bags most outstanding R & D award

Dr. Fiorelio Abenes, visiting professor of CLSU and Emeritus Professor of Calpoly University Pomona, and Ms. Perla Florendo, Senior Science Research Specialist of the Philippine Carabao Center; received the award “Most Outstanding R&D in Industry and Energy-Luzon Cluster” during the 7th Regional Science and Technology Competition of the Philippine Council for Industry and Energy Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology.
The research which is entitled “Validation of Paradigm: The Philippine Carabao as a model for Cellulosic Ethanol Production” has significant breakthrough towards commercialization of biomass ethanol. This is a novel method to turn lignocellulose into fermentable carbohydrates using microorganisms from rumen fluid of carabaos.
The competition was held on February 13, 2008 at PCIERD-DOST, Bicutan, Taguig, Metro Manila. The eight qualifiers which competed for the awards were: Regional Metal and Testing Center-Region III, Camarines Sur Polytechnic College, Mariano Marcos State University, FPRDI-DOST, Don Honorio College of Arts and Trade, BIOTECH Center UPLB (3rd Place), Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (2nd place) and the Philippine Carabao Center at CLSU which received the first place.
The plaque was given on March 14, 2008 at Dusit Hotel during the National Competition of Science and Technology for Most Outstanding S&T.
